Leading Economic Indicators

HOUSING STARTS: New residential construction softened in August. Total housing starts declined 2.6% from July to an annualized rate of 1.275 million, while building permits fell 2.7%. The decline was largely driven by multifamily construction; single-family starts, meanwhile, rose 7.6% for the month. (report)

CONSUMER SENTIMENT: Consumer confidence edged lower for a second consecutive month in August, falling 0.8 points to 89.4. Consumers felt somewhat better about current business and job conditions, but their outlook for the next six months became more pessimistic, particularly around business conditions and the labor market. Overall, the report suggests households are managing the present environment reasonably well while remaining cautious about what comes next. (report)

Mortgage Rates: Why a Fed Move Is Not the Whole Story

It is natural to expect mortgage rates to move immediately whenever the Federal Reserve raises or lowers its policy rate. However, 30-year fixed mortgage rates are more closely tied to 10-year Treasury yields and investors’ expectations for inflation and long-term economic growth. This article explains why a Fed decision can matter, but does not automatically determine the rate a homebuyer will be offered.

Financial Quote or Tip

Tip: Match your cash to your timeline. Money you may need in the next few years generally should not take the same amount of investment risk as money intended for retirement decades from now. Higher interest rates have made cash and short-term bonds more useful tools again, but the goal is still to make sure each dollar has a purpose in your overall plan.

Understanding Major Indexes and Lesser-Known Indexes

Most investors follow the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, but other indexes can offer a fuller picture of what is happening beneath the market’s surface. This article explains the major and lesser-known indexes, what they measure, and how they can help you better understand changes in the economy and your investments.
