Leading Economic Indicators

U.S. RETAIL AND FOOD SERVICE SALES:

The latest Census Bureau report showed that U.S. retail and food service sales were down 0.6% from June but still 5.0% higher than July 2025. While spending slowed somewhat in July, consumers are still spending more than they were a year ago. The takeaway is that the consumer remains relatively healthy, but there are signs that spending may be cooling. (report)

CONSUMER SENTIMENT:

Consumer confidence edged lower in July, falling 1.4 points to 90.8, while consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions declined for the third consecutive month. Expectations for the months ahead were unchanged but remained in negative territory, suggesting consumers continue to see limited improvement in the economy and labor market. (report)
